Dated October 2009: It is hard to believe that it has been fifty Years since we were at Whittier High School. Our great school, established in 1900 may have seemed old to us then, but now it is over 100 years old and has aged gracefully thanks to retrofitting and refurbishment.  As such a classic campus it was featured in the "Back to the Future" movies. Although, a United States President was an alumnus before us, we may have been there at its prime. After the 2nd World War our town grew and in 1952 WHS had 3,500 students from all over the district. By the time we graduated in 1959 three other high schools had opened, with three additional soon to come.

History tells us that the Cardinal was chosen as the school mascot because it is a native of Mill Creek on the north side of Whittier. It was selected because of its scarlet coat, which was the school color and it was felt that this bird possessed the great spirit and determination that has always been representative of WHS. We like to think that it was particularly true for those of us coming of age there in the 50’s.

We may not be from the "Greatest Generation", or quite a part of the post war "Baby Boomers", but being teens in the 50’s definitely qualifies us to be part of the "Happy Days" generation. We were blessed to have a safe and special time and place to be in our formative years. Now here we are, most of us having completed our employment careers. Some of us are a little worse for wear, showing our age and needing a bit of retrofitting too. And unfortunately we have lost many classmates already. But we came together to reminisce and enjoy each other at a great age, our retirement years, a time for travel, hobbies and grandchildren.

What fond memories we have of the good old days. Many of them were shared in our Reunion Memory Book. We all have been enjoying this book since the reunion, We hope our 50th Reunion was a memorable time for all that came and that the rest of you are getting to share in the books and photos available to you. We on the Reunion Committee enjoyed working over the last five years to make it what memorial event!
